We have created this page as a guide to breeding. This information is basic breeding for recessive traits, certain colors and patterns.
- Mar 22, 2013 Breeding the gamefowl. Start breeding with quality broodcocks and brood hens from a reliable source. In the selection process, see to it that brood cocks and brood hens are vigorous and healthy, and free from parasites and infection. They must come from families of superior performance.
- Successful linebreeding depends on how carefully the original stock was selected for gameness, cutting, ability, and the other characteristics that go to make up a good game cock. OUTBREEDING - Outbreeding is simply the mating of fowl that are very distantly related. This system is generally spoken of as adding ne blood.
- I bought two gamefowl roosters to breed them with a few days ago and I want to breed them with the roosters that share closer genetics. I don't think any of my hens or roosters are pure breed but they do seem to lean more heavily one way the or the other.

Lavender and Splits
We offer a vast assortment of Lavender colored breeds in which this can be found helpful;Orpingtons, Ameraucanas, Modern Game Bantam, Leghorn, and Silkies. This is a brief explanation of working with Lavender genetics and creating birds that are split to Lavender. By creating splits, you are expanding your flocks gene pool and improving color and feather quality. Over time Lavender can become diluted and occasionally bad feather quality can happen. Using splits in your breeding program is always a smart choice so that you don’t have problems down the line. For a bird to be Lavender, you need two copies of Lavender to be expressed. The splits do not visually look lavender, but they carry for it, and when bred back to a Lavender bird, or together, they will produce a certain amount of Lavender offspring. Statistical outcomes of breeding are below.
Lav x Black = 100% Splits
Split x Black = 100% Black
Lav x Lav = All Lav
Lav x Split = 50% Lav, 50%Split
Split x Split = 50% Split, 25% Lav, 25% Black.
There are not visual markers to tell which black chicks will be split so therefore you will need to test breed them. Please keep this in mind if you are interested in purchasing Split chicks, it can be hit or miss.

Blue, Black, and Splash
Blue Black and Splash (BBS) is one of the most basic breeding combinations. We suggest this color for beginners in breeding. It’s easy to work with and can apply to many breeds. This chart can be applied to Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Orpingtons, Cuckoo Orpingtons, Blue Double Laced Barnevelders, Polish, Cochins, Langshans and many others that we offer. When breeding Blue and Black birds, it’s important to understand that Blue is not a dominant gene. It will not breed completely true.
Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, and 25% Splash
Blue x Black = 50% Blue and 50% Black
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue and 50% Splash
BlackxBlack = 100% Black
BlackxSplash = 100% Blue
SplashxSplash = 100% Splash. This breeding will dilute the color causing it to fade
Blue x Black = 50% Blue and 50% Black
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue and 50% Splash
BlackxBlack = 100% Black
BlackxSplash = 100% Blue
SplashxSplash = 100% Splash. This breeding will dilute the color causing it to fade
Chocolate Breeding
Chocolate is similar to Lavender, but it is a sex linked gene and lavender is not. Chocolate genetics can be used to create sex linked birds. When Chocolate is bred to chocolate they will breed true. Black birds can also be used to create birds that are split to chocolate. Chocolate can be used to create sex linked birds as well.

Barring & Cuckoo Breeding
Cuckoo is also a sex link pattern. It can not be hidden, either it is there or it is not, which proves useful when determining cockerels from pullets at hatch depending on the breeding. It gets a little bit confusing when it comes to cock birds. They can be double barred or single barred depending on how many copies they inherit. Either way, if cuckoo/barring are in the breeding, they will always exhibit the pattern. If the cock bird has two copies of the barring gene, it is double barred, if he only has one copy, he is single barred. Single barred cock birds will typically exhibit a darker color. Hens on the other hand can only carry one copy of the gene. By crossing a double barred cock bird over a solid color hen, you have just created yourself a sex linked breeding. The pullet chicks will be solid in color, while the cockerel chicks will have a spot on their head and show the cuckoo/barring pattern. This is the basic genetics behind our blue egg laying sex links. We use a California Grey Hen with a Black or Blue Ameraucana cock bird. Cuckoo and Barring is also fun to work with because it can be worked into many color varieties and breeds.

Naked Neck genetics for Showgirl Breeding (naked neck silkie)
Breeding Fowl Game Systems
Please keep in mind that this section can relate to any breed that is naked neck (like the Turkmen), but in this case it is directed towards Showgirl breeding. Showgirls can inherit either one or two copies of the naked neck gene. When they only inherit one gene (heterozygous), they have a partial naked neck, which is referred to as a bowtie. Bowties look almost like a “bib”, it is a patch of feathering at the mid to lower neck that forms an oval shape of feathers covering the lower neck and upper crop area, then blends into the shoulders. When a bird has two copies of the gene(homozygous), they have a fully naked neck (no bowtie showgirl). You can not get a naked neck or a naked neck with a bowtie unless one of the parents is naked neck/bowtied. If they have the gene, then they express it.
